Gecko getting greener with dry cleaning

Korean Master License for GreenEarth® Cleaning granted to Gecko Holdings, LLC

KANSAS CITY – Gecko Holdings, LLC, as part of its new Master Licensor agreement with GreenEarth Cleaning for Korea, successfully completed its first conversion in Seoul last week.  Gecko Holdings will market and license GreenEarth cleaning throughout Korea. Gecko joins Sanyo Electric, Master Licensor for Japan, in bringing environmentally safe dry cleaning to Asia. GreenEarth Cleaning is an environmentally preferred dry cleaning process that uses no hazardous chemicals and is safer for the water, soil and air. Most dry cleaners use perchloroethylene, a petroleum-based solvent facing increasing regulatory pressure worldwide as an air pollutant.

“Dry cleaning is undergoing global change. Companies who want to stay in business need to be reinventing themselves today,” said company president Hoon Noh. “We have invested in the Master License for Korea because we believe GreenEarth is the future.”

The cost of regulatory compliance typically falls to business operators. Dry cleaners are no exception. “The GreenEarth system is not only better for the environment, it is better for dry cleaners,” said Noh. "Unlike CO2 or wet cleaning solvent systems that also offer green benefits, GreenEarth has affordable equipment costs and better operational efficiency. And very important in our market, customers appreciate it.  Fabrics actually feel softer and smoother to the touch, colors keep their brightness and whites don’t yellow, keeping garments looking newer longer.”

The GreenEarth process cleans with pure liquid silicone, a safe, natural byproduct of sand.  Silicone is used in many personal care products such as deodorants and shampoos. GreenEarth Cleaning solvent is also odorless, so it eliminates the chemical smell that is associated with traditional dry cleaning."  According to Noh, the silicone-based product makes cleaning delicate garments safer as well. "Specialty items like hanbok, traditional Korean garments, often don't do well in harsh cleaning fluids but they come out looking very nice with GreenEarth. Silks, beads, sequins, leather trim, it all comes out perfectly. GreenEarth breaks all the old rules associated with dry cleaning and is truly a revolutionary process."

The solvent used by most Korean dry cleaners is hydrocarbon. Hydrocarbon systems, while environmentally preferable over perc, have a VOC profile that is coming under increasing regulatory scrutiny. GreenEarth’s liquid silicone solvent can be safely used in hydrocarbon machines, eliminating the burden of equipment investment for operators looking to convert.
