Interview with Jenny and Ron Davidson, owners

How did you get involved in this business?

We wanted to open our own business so we could be our own boss and thought a car wash would be a good idea. So we became connected with Kwik Industries in Dallas. Kwik Industries helps people open car washes, quick lubes and dry cleaners. They convinced us to come to Dallas and check out all of their business ideas. We really liked the dry cleaners, mostly because we were very good dry cleaning customers. So we decided to quit our jobs in the health care field and open the first Kwik Dry Clean in Colorado.

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?

We are a Green Earth Dry Cleaners, which means we use the Green Earth for dry cleaning instead of the traditional solvent Perchloroethylene, which is classified by the EPA as a likely carcinogen. Green Earth brand is a dry cleaning process that replaces the petrochemical solvents traditionally used in dry cleaning with liquid silicone. Liquid silicone is an odorless, colorless solution that is ideal for fabric care and is better for the environment. At Kwik Dry Clean, solving your dry cleaning issues is number one and being environmentally friendly is a great place to start.

What do you like best about your line of work?

The thing we enjoy most about our business is that it provides an opportunity for us to have positive interactions with the people around us. Not only with our customers, but also with our employees. It’s great to get to know what others in our community are doing. We also love our employees and hearing their ideas and concerns.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge is monitoring our supply costs, so that we can keep our prices low. It’s very important for us to produce an excellent product at the lowest price possible.

Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:

The most surprising thing that most people may not know about dry cleaning is that in dry cleaning the clothes actually don’t stay dry. They do get wet, but not with water. Another thing is that women’s cotton dress shirts cost more to professionally launder than men’s because, typically, they don’t fit on our automated laundry shirt press. The women’s shirts have to be hand pressed and thus take more time and cost a bit more.
